Berliner Stadtreinigung

BSR is facing the challenges of workforce transformation and turned to hint with the task of implementing autonomous technology in street cleaning. The result is Sweep: a collaborative cleaning robot that relieves employees and speeds up work processes.

Research

Urban hotspots are one of the most complex challenges for city cleaning. To solve them, we analyzed not only the management of public squares themselves, but also the current equipment: the cleaning tools used so far have not been developed in a user-centric way.

Concept

The basic principle of Sweep: the experience and perception of a human combined with the efficiency of a machine. The targeted use of autonomous technology is intended to enhance the workplace of Berlin’s more than 2,000 hand cleaners and at the same time make their work easier.

Interaction Design

The classic relationship between operator and machine is dissolved with Sweep. The absence of operating elements placed new demands on communication and interaction. The employee controls Sweep mainly through his movements and gestures.

"The idea for Sweep has inspired us from the very beginning as an innovation with a high potential for application. On the way to further development via prototype to product we have been working very constructively with hint for several years. We are convinced of Sweep [...] and are looking forward to the application on Berlin squares!"

Mobile App

To keep the direct interaction with Sweep as dedicated as possible, a mobile app is also available to the users. This gives them full control over all Sweep functions and forms the new digital hub for everyday work.

Prototyping

The novel interaction was designed and tested directly on an interactive prototype. Visual programming enables immediate feedback for all functions. Timings and animations can thus be precisely controlled to achieve particularly natural movement patterns.
